About Against The Grain Restaurants

Chris Cook and Andrew Voss, The thirty-something friends with two decades of combined restaurant experience saw a need for a “cool, creative, casual, and approachable” new eating and drinking establishment in Williamsburg. They decided to meet that need in 2017 with the opening of the Amber Ox Public House, but their collaboration had been years in the making.

Andrew, who grew up in a small town in western Michigan and Chris, who grew up on a dairy farm in a small central Michigan town, met in 2005 when they opened a little neighborhood Gastro-Pub in Grand Rapids Michigan. Andrew as the Executive Chef and Chris as the General Manager, the two worked together for more than a year, before heading off on separate career paths.

Chris worked in corporate restaurants in Florida, before becoming the co-owner of several restaurants back in Michigan. Seeking a change, Chris and his family relocated to the Chesapeake Virginia in 2012 to pursue a career in restaurant development, as the owner of several franchise restaurants.

Andrew left Michigan to pursue his passion for cooking, and took various culinary leadership positions with the JW Marriott Brand, before moving to the Renaissance Hotel in Boston Massachusetts, as its Executive Chef and Director of Restaurant Operations.

Despite the distance between them, the friends kept in touch, often kicking around the idea of working together on something new. In 2016, Chris began persuading Andrew that Williamsburg was ripe for an innovative new venture that combined bold, seasonal and regionally sourced food with the region’s best craft beers-- including their own brews. In 2017, Andrew, his wife, Abby, and their young sons, Mason and Oliver, moved from Boston to join Chris in Williamsburg.

“We decided to combine our passions for running modern restaurants with our passion for great beer, and the Amber Ox Public House was born,” says Andrew. Amber Ox has gone on to become a regional staple in the restaurant community, known refined southern food, inspired by the regional farming community and local producers.

Now that the Amber Ox is up and running, Chris and Andrew have gone on to develop three new additional food concepts, that are equally as inspired as Amber Ox!

Our love and passion for bread and coffee inspired the opening of “The Bake Shop”, in 2020. The Bake Shop is our communities only Artisan Bakery, Known for hand-crafted bagels, artisan breads, and inspired pastries. The Bake Shop also delivers an uncompromised coffee experience, by partnering with our regions best, craft coffee roasters. The Bake Shop has quickly gained a reputation for quality and craftsmanship, unlike any other bakery around.

The newest and most exciting addition’s to the ATG Portfolio are the Electric Circus Taco Bar and Ol’ Dominion Burger! Both of these modern, street food inspired eateries are located inside the tasting room of our sister brewery, Precarious Beer Project. Known for “energetic” grub, both Electric Circus and O.D.B deliver the best “Beer Friendly” food you’ll find in any craft brewery in the region.

“It’s through food and drink that we connect to our roots -- and then to each other.”, says Andrew.
