Position Description:
The features editor is the leader of all day-to-day activities in editorial department, and responsible for a team of two full-time, and 1-3 interns (who you will be responsible for hiring). You'll help organize and oversee the design department's editorial tasks, working on a near-daily basis with our print designer, web designer, and photo editor. You'll collaborate with and report to our managing editor and editor-in-chief.
You will assign and manage the flow of all editorial content and publishing on the website, and will do a 1st round edit and then final edits and approval of all editorial content published on the website and in any related print collateral.
Feature ideas will be generated by you, by the editor in chief, and by your staff (we try to promote as collaborative and open an environment as possible.) You'll be expected to create and maintain a schedule of editorial features inspired by the teams travels, tastings, and trends.
Writing: You will be expected to be able to write 2500-word feature-length articles, brief technique features, and everything in between. You'll work with the Editor-in-Chief on Letters from the Editor, prepare presentations and speeches for conferences and Rising Stars awards.
Travel: You will be expected to travel to various American cities for Rising Stars tastings and industry events (IACP, WCR National Conference, etc). Occasionally travel will take you outside the country for international culinary conferences (Madrid Fusion, Identita Golose, Lo Mejor de la Gastronomia, and so on).
Rising Stars: You will be responsible for tastings and editorial writing for our annual Rising Stars chef awards now in it's 8th year. You will organize and attend tasting trips and the tasting and awards gala in the respective cities. Once the winners are chosen, you'll be responsible for publishing the winners' bios, recipes and interviews on the website, an event program book, and features describing the culinary scene in that city.
International Chefs Congress: You'll be involved in planning the theme, presenters and programming for the annual International Chefs Congress, and will be responsible for all ICC content for the website and the program book, and daily wrap-ups during the event.
What you must have: - Formal food training, either through culinary school or kitchen experience - Minimum 2 years experience in food writing and editing at a print or web publication - Recipe editing experience - Management experience - A passion for food and the culinary industry - Lots of energy, and a love for non-corporate environments
It would be great if you have: - Photography experience a plus (we shoot food, chefs and events) - Encyclopedic knowledge of chefs and restaurants - Experience leading panels, giving presentations, and speaking in public a plus
Salary: We are a small independent magazine - no big corporate pay checks here. We do however have a great office, great team of about 15 full-time employees, no bureaucracy or corporate politics here. You want freedom to pursue stories you want to write about - you will get that here.
