Position Description:ABOUT BUTTERFIELD 9

Butterfield 9's stylish dicor evokes the elegance of downtown Washington's bygone era. Housed in the original Garfinckel's Department Store. Established in the 1930's, the restaurant melds the architecture of the 30's with clean contemporary lines..


The ideal candidates for these positions are creative, organized as well as energetic and will have a proven track record in fine dining. Butterfield 9 is a high end restaurant open for lunch M-F and dinner 7 days a week.
The Sous Chef will be responsible for reporting to the Executive Chef. Candidates must be self-starters who embrace teaching, developing and motivating the finest back of the house employees. Positions will be responsible for assuring exceptional food quality and service, have an understanding of labor and food costs as well as the generation of cost improvements in both of these areas, while implementing company policies, standards, programs and procedures.
As part of the management team, both the Sous Chef and Jr Sous Chef will have the opportunity to collaborate with the Executive Chef in order to move the company's culinary vision and financial outlook forward.


Sous Chef

The ideal candidate has a minimum of 5 years of fine dining experience (with at least 2 years of Sous Chef experience) with a passionate approach to cuisine that has been reflected in prior positions.

Jr Sous Chef

The ideal candidate has a minimum of 2 years of fine dining experience with a passionate approach to cuisine that has been reflected in prior positions.

European Experience, Five Diamond Restaurant a plus.
Culinary school preferred, but may be replaced with hands on experience.
Computer knowledge helpful - with emphasis on excel and word.

Minimum of three professional and personal references required

The candidates who fill these positions will possess discriminating attention to detail as well as quality control. This will be reflected in their presentations as well as that of the team. Must be enthusiastic, production oriented, possess excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as have strong interpersonal/leadership abilities.


As he traveled through the classic grounds of European chefs, Harr stopped to visit some of the Michelin starred restaurants where he previously worked such as the Taillevent and Guy Savoy of Paris..

While in Europe, Harr also had the opportunity to work in the noteworthy kitchens of Geneva, Brussels, Cap dAntibes near Nice and France's Savoie region

Clearly no stranger to the influences of creative culinary talents abroad or here in the United States, Harr interned as sous chef to the renowned Jacques Vanstaden of the famed London Club in Las Vegas. Moving on Harr influenced the cuisines of many famed establishments in North American cities such as Montreal, New York City, and Miami.

His recent return to the Washington DC area landed him at Tysons Corner's Maestro with another award-winning chef,FabioTrabocchi; but Chef Harr was searching for an opportunity to command his own kitchen. He has found just that at Butterfield 9.

Upon arriving at Butterfield 9 in downtown Washington DC owner Umbi Singh exclaimed, "Timing is ideal; the fit is perfect, we have been evolving for our first five years.
